Choco Cup – Day 1

The Choco Cup kicked off today with two races in the hot Balaton summer. The light breeze and scorching sunshine made it challenging for the kids to stay focused. 127 young Opti sailors from 15 countries entered this regatta which is a dress rehersal for the European Championship starting next week.

The fleet was divided into two groups, Yellow Group started first in 3–5 kts Westerly. Right after the start the wind died for a short while then it came back again with a slight southern twist, so the left side was the place to be. Two Croatian sailors Deni MARTINOVIC and Martin VERBANAC took the advantage of the South Power and built up a nice lead. They decided the race win in a private battle, Deni coming first in the end. Third place went to Morgan LAUBER (SUI).

Racing was tighter in the Blue Group, Mara TURIN (SLO) finishing first, Rok VERDERBER (SLO) coming second and Daniel GÖTTLICH (GER) third. The wind picked up a bit in the upwind finish, making the decision easy to start a second race.

After crossing the finish line, another race began immidiately: reaching the Choco Boat as soon as possible and get the sweets from the volunteers who throwed biscuits and chocolates of all kinds into the boats nearby.

Just like in the first, both groups had premature starters in the second race under black flag, so they have to play safer from now on. The wind continued to be inconsistent, pretending to die, then freshing up and getting light again for the finish. PRO Béla Erdélyi decided to call it a day. Race wins this time went to Rok VERDERBER (SLO) and Morgan LAUBER (SUI), no wonder that they are sitting first and second overall.
